In the wake of Theresa May assuming office in 10 Downing Street, Nigel Evans, MP for the Ribble Valley, has expressed his support for the new Prime Minister, who replaces David Cameron following his resignation.
Nigel went on to say,
“Theresa May is a proven leader who is capable of uniting both the party and the country as a whole, as seen in her work in the Home Office, and as an MP for the last nineteen years. David Cameron was an excellent Prime Minister and I am confident that Theresa May is the right person to continue to achieve successful results.”
Nigel also spoke of the significance of having a female Prime Minister, only the second time in the country’s history,
“This shows that both the Conservative Party and Politics in general is becoming more progressive, and can only be viewed in a positive fashion.”
Before becoming Prime Minister, May had held roles as the Home Secretary, the Minister of Women and Equalities and Chair of the Conservative Party. Upon the resignation of David Cameron, May then won a swift leadership contest, beating political heavyweights such as Michael Gove, Liam Fox and Andrea Leadsom before being declared Prime Minister on July 13th.
May will now turn her attention to forming a cabinet and the ongoing process the exit of the European Union.
Nigel also spoke of his delight that May will commit to the results of the EU referendum,
“Despite campaigning to remain in the European Union, Theresa May has shown that she is committed to deliver on what a majority of UK citizens have shown they want. This is direct democracy in its finest form and I am sure that she will carry out the will of the people in the best possible way for Britain”.
