Today Nigel welcomed the announcement that the right-to-buy scheme will be extended to more than a million housing association tenants, in legislation set out in this week’s Queen’s Speech.
The new Housing Bill will provide funding for the discount by forcing councils to sell their most expensive housing when vacant and use the proceeds to build new affordable homes in the same area.
Speaking from Westminster this morning Mr Evans said,
“During the recent election campaign housing was a particularly large issue across the Ribble Valley. One aspect of the debate that united people from Bamber Bridge to Bolton by Bowland was that we need more affordable homes for young people in the area. I am confident that this Bill will help bring that about.”
Having the chance to own a home of your own is an aspiration for the vast majority of people in this country and the extension of the help-to-buy scheme will level the playing field between council tenants and those in housing association properties.”
