Nigel today welcomed a report by the Home Affairs Select Committee which proposed a statutory ban on the identification of people arrested on suspicion of sexual offences in England and Wales.
Speaking this morning Mr Evans said;
“I strongly welcome the release of the report from Keith Vaz’s committee proposing an equality of treatment until charges are brought forward. This proposal will only provide anonymity until charges are brought, therefore still allowing others to come forward once charges are brought, but will prevent people being hung out to dry. I do not believe that it is right for people to be plastered all over every national newspaper in order to fish out other people.
I also welcome the report’s proposal that bail should be initially limited to 28 days and will give investigations much more focus and will bring certainty to both parties much sooner. The most high profile abuse of bail and re-bail has been the broadcaster Paul Gambaccini and I hope that the CPS will take on board the Select Committee’s recommendation that they apologise for his treatment.”
