Published annually, the Sunday Times guide combines data such as crime rates, house prices and school performance with local knowledge to create the definitive list of the most desirable destinations in the UK. The Ribble Valley, which boasts stunning scenery such as Pendle Hill and the rolling hills of the Forest of Bowland came 11th in the North West category, which was topped by Altringham in Greater Manchester.
In recent years, the Ribble Valley has gained notoriety as the home to some of the best gastropubs in the UK. Estrella Damm’s best 50 gastropubs list named the Freemasons at Wiswell and the Parker’s Arms at Newton-In-Bowland in the top ten. The Times also pays homage to Cowman’s Famous Sausage Shop, and D Byrne & Co wine merchants – both situated in Clitheroe town centre.
Speaking from the Ribble Valley, Nigel Evans said:
“It is absolutely no surprise that the Ribble Valley has made the Sunday Times’ list, we undoubtedly have some of the most magnificent scenery of anywhere in the UK. A stone’s throw from Clitheroe town centre is the Forest of Bowland AONB which is the very centre of Britain, we have some of the most outstanding restaurants, independent businesses and pubs.”
Getting fresh produce to these businesses has never been an issue, the Ribble Valley has by far the largest number of farm holdings in Lancashire, 626 or 17.8% of the county total, ensuring fresh produce can be accessed all-year-round.
“As alluded to in the Times’ list, what really sets the Ribble Valley apart is the sense of community you get when you visit every town, village or hamlet, each of which has its own unique identity and character. From Chipping on one side to Tosside on the edge of Yorkshire, the Ribble Valley offers heritage, history and charm. I am proud to call the Ribble Valley my home.”
Schools in the Ribble Valley were also a contributing factor to the Sunday Times’ decision, making reference to Clitheroe Royal Grammar School.
