Nigel has today called for the introduction of an annual Christmas stamp with a reduced rate and guaranteed pre-Christmas delivery. In a letter to Moya Green, the chief executive of Royal Mail, Mr Evans said, ‘The sending and receiving of Christmas cards is one of the great traditions of the festive season, but with the price of a first class stamp now standing at 62p and a second class stamp at 53p I fear that it is one which may be under threat of dying out. I therefore am writing to propose the introduction of a 25p Christmas stamp, that if sent between the 1st and 17th December is guaranteed to arrive before Christmas Day.’
Speaking from the Ribble Valley this afternoon Mr Evans said, “It would not be Christmas without the cards and I am particularly concerned about what this trend may mean for the children of today, who are almost born with an iPhone in their hands. The email inbox is not the same as the letter box at Christmas time and I hope that Royal Mail will take on board my suggestion and keep this important Christmas tradition alive.”
