MP for the Ribble Valley Nigel Evans recently attended an event by The Brain Tumour Charity to raise awareness of brain tumour diagnosis.
The Brain Tumour Charity is the world’s leading charity in its field and the largest dedicated funder of research into brain tumours globally. Their aim is to double the survival and halve the harm that brain tumours have on an individual’s quality of life.
Brain tumours are currently the biggest cancer killer in children and the under 40s and just 12% of adults survive five years after a brain cancer diagnosis. With over 12,000 people diagnosed with a brain tumour in the UK every year, it is clear that much more needs to be done to tackle this devastating disease.
The Brain Tumour Charity is working to improve the speed of diagnosis, and in July 2022 launched their campaign ‘Better Safe than Tumour’, aiming to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of a brain tumour and encourage those experiencing symptoms to approach their GP as soon as possible. Their campaign this year will also aim to raise awareness among healthcare professionals and provide resources for those working in the sector.
Speaking on this event Nigel said:
“I welcome the work being done by The Brain Tumour Charity to raise awareness of the symptoms of a brain tumour. As brain tumours remain the biggest cancer killer in young people, ensuring everyone is aware of the early symptoms is vital to ensuring faster diagnosis.
“The Brain Tumour Charity’s latest campaign to raise awareness of the signs of a brain tumour will undoubtedly help to save lives through faster diagnosis, and I strongly encourage anyone with symptoms that are unusual, persistent, or unexplained to go and see their GP.”
